| We are in the process of changing from the outside reading devices where the meter reader plugs in a handheld reading device directly obtaining a reading from inside, to a radio-transmitting device. This radio device allows the reader to receive the meter reading from the street via a handheld device.
We are doing this for improved meter reading efficiency and to prevent injury to our employees. Meter reading, especially in the winter, can be a hazardous occupation due to slipping and falling. The radio devices when installed on the outside of a dwelling will allow the reader to walk down the street and capture the reading versus walking up to each dwelling. Eventually we hope to progress to the drive by system which will allow a meter reader to drive a vehicle and capture readings without getting out of the vehicle. In time through attrition this will also allow us to reduce the size of our meter reading staff.
As an update we have installed 7,630 outside radio read devices out of a total 9,900 accounts through November 2004.
